Dr. Henry Teaches Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression Livestream

January 29, 2023

Dr. Luke Henry speaking at Parker University in Dallas, Texas 2019. Henry is an alumnus of Clemson University Computer Engineering with a minor in Mathematics.

Due to recent nationwide flight delays, Dr. Henry’s Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression seminar January 28, 2023 was changed from live in Chicago, Illinois to livestream. While disappointed at not being able to interact with colleagues in person, Dr. Henry wishes to thank the chiropractic physicians from Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Illinois for attending his 12-hour continuing education lecture.

While traction has been used to treat spinal disorders since antiquity, nonsurgical spinal decompression uses computer technology to gently lower pressure inside the spinal discs and relieve pressure on the delicate nerves. This novel physiotherapeutic procedure is performed using FDA cleared medical devices. Decompression initially was plagued with controversy, due to unscrupulous marketing but today it is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence and is becoming an established procedure taught at several chiropractic colleges. Indications include bulging discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, sciatica, neck pain, and back pain. Many chronic pain sufferers are looking for an answer and wish to avoid pain medications, injections and surgery. Dr. Henry brought IDD Therapy to Greenville in 2012 and has developed a multifaceted treatment approach incorporating hands-on treatments, rehabilitation exercises, and low-level laser therapy. This evidence-based approach helps to significantly reduce chronic pain for most patients and is also appropriate for acute injury from auto accidents, work and sports injuries. While temporary soreness is possible, the treatment is very safe and gentle. Dr. Henry has served as a postgraduate lecturer for three chiropractic colleges and is a member of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association. His 2017 study on spinal decompression has been cited by researchers internationally. Henry gave seven lectures throughout the United States last year in association with Fetterman Events and National University of Health Sciences.

Doctors of chiropractic wishing to learn more about this procedure may register for one of Dr. Henry’s upcoming classes, with lectures planned for Raleigh, Asheville, Greenville, Knoxville, Florence, Dothan, and Atlanta in 2023. The Chicago program may be rescheduled, depending on air travel difficulties.

Dr. Henry practices at Henry Chiropractic Clinic, LLC at 1314 Pelham Road in Greenville, South Carolina, with a practice emphasis on acute and chronic back and neck pain.

Dr. Henry Teaches Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression to Chiropractors Across the United States

October 4, 2022

Dr. Henry addresses a full class of chiropractors in Nashville, TN with a 12 hour continuing education lecture on Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression.

Dr. Luke Henry wishes to thank his staff, Fetterman Events, and the 75 chiropractic physicians from Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama that attended his Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression continuing education class in Nashville, Saturday, September 10, 2022. Henry stated, “My goal is to bring doctors of chiropractic more clinical and professional success for the benefit of the thousands of pain sufferers they serve. I’m thrilled that my class was full and look forward to future lectures.” Non-surgical spinal decompression is a relatively new, non-invasive procedure that helps to significantly reduce or, in some cases, to eliminate chronic back pain or neck pain. Indications include bulging discs, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, sciatica, neck pain, and back pain. The addition of computer technology to spinal distraction techniques gently lowers the pressure inside the discs in the spine to reduce disc protrusions and alleviate nerve compression without the risks associated with drugs or surgery. Dr. Henry teaches decompression as part of a multimodal treatment approach, which may also include therapeutic exercises, spinal adjustments / manipulation, myofascial release, and cold laser (AKA low-level laser therapy). He presented on the history of traction / decompression, evidence-based spine care, indications and contraindications, FDA medical device clearances, referral to other physicians when appropriate, outcomes assessment, diagnostic imaging (x-rays, MRI, and / or CT as is necessary), treatment protocols, risk management, a review of recent biomedical research and case studies. All of Dr. Henry’s classes have been approved for continuing education credit for doctors of chiropractic, either by state boards, FCLB PACE or through affiliation with National University of Health Sciences. Thus far in 2022, Henry has presented to DCs in Tennessee, Michigan, Delaware, Indiana, and South Carolina. Henry is an alumnus of Clemson University (Computer Engineering) and graduated at the top of his class from Sherman College of Chiropractic. He has authored peer-reviewed research on chiropractic, laser and non-surgical spinal decompression and is a reviewer for multiple scientific journals. Dr. Henry continues to practice full time and he is available to treat patients at Henry Chiropractic Clinic, LLC, 1314 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC 29615.

Future Classes in 2022:
10/22/2022 Non Surgical Spinal Decompression Lansing, Michigan
11/10/2022 Non Surgical Spinal Decompression Madison, Wisconsin

Dr. Henry will continue lecturing for Fetterman Events on decompression in cities throughout the United States in 2023, including Chicago, Raleigh, Atlanta, etc.

Study Finds Spinal Manipulation Improves Cardiac Autonomic Control

A randomized placebo-controlled trial published in Spine by researchers in Brazil compared supine upper thoracic spine manipulation to myofascial release and placebo in 59 patients with musculoskeletal pain. Only those receiving manipulation had improvement in heart rate variability, indicative of positive change in resting cardiac autonomic control, but with no change in blood pressure. The change was immediate after one session of manipulation. Interestingly, myofascial release and placebo did not change HRV.

Doctors of chiropractic have long argued that chiropractic adjustments not only relieve pain but also improve function of the nervous system. Other studies, including those by my colleague, Dr. Hart, have found that chiropractic adjustments may lead to improvement in heart rate variability and lower resting pulse rate, which are associated with improved health and longevity. The old saying is, “Chiropractic adds years to life and life to years”.

Chiropractic Reduces Opioid Prescriptions by Half

A recent study published in Pain Medicine by researchers from Southern California University of Health Sciences, Dartmouth, and Kaizo Health reviewed five years of claims data from three states and over 100,000 patients, aged 18 to 84 years old. Chiropractic services in addition to primary care reduced the risk of filling an opioid prescription by half compared to patients receiving primary care alone. The effect was greater in those people who saw a chiropractic physician within 30 days of diagnosis.

Chiropractic offers a safe, proven and cost-effective options for patients suffering from acute and chronic spine pain. At Henry Chiropractic Clinic, LLC we have served thousands of patients with neck and back pain, auto accidents, and herniated, bulging or degenerative discs since opening in 2006. Our practice emphasis utilizes new technology, including non-surgical spinal decompression and cold laser therapy, to gently relieve acute and chronic pain. This study reaffirms our commitment to providing Greenville with pain relief without drugs or surgery.

AMA Journal Study Supports Chiropractic for Military

July 14, 2018

Dr. Luke Henry, Chiropractic Physician

A clinical trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open compared active-duty military personnel receiving the usual medical care (medication, physical therapy, etc.) for lower back pain to another group with the usual medical care plus chiropractic. Not surprisingly, the addition of care by doctors of chiropractic brought significant reductions in pain and disability with high patient satisfaction.

This study is significant because the chiropractic profession, while considered mainstream today, historically faced opposition from the medical establishment. In 1987, following years of litigation, the AMA was found guilty of a conspiracy to contain and eliminate chiropractic in the Wilk antitrust trial. Today, medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic work together for the patient’s best interest. Veterans and active duty military personnel, however, still struggle to get access to chiropractic care as a covered service.  Fortunately, this year congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018 to expand access to chiropractic for veterans. Back pain and neck pain are leading causes of disability and the U.S. is facing an opioid epidemic. Expanding access for veterans and active duty military will help by providing a non-drug, non-surgical approach to spine and musculoskeletal pain.

FAQ: Does Medicare Cover Chiropractic?

In Medicare and You Handbook 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) states:

“Chiropractic services
Medicare covers manipulation of the spine by a chiropractor to
correct a subluxation (when the spinal joints fail to move properly, but
the contact between the joints remains intact). You pay 20% of the
Medicare-approved amount. The Part B deductible applies.
Note: Medicare doesn’t cover other services or tests a chiropractor orders,
other than manipulation of the spine.”

Yes, Medicare covers some chiropractic services. However, while the science of chiropractic has progressed, Medicare chiropractic coverage hasn’t been expanded since 1972 and is limited to manipulation of the spine when necessary to correct a subluxation. A subluxation has been described by Medicare as, “When one or more of the bones of your spine move out of position”.  The subluxation must be associated with a symptomatic muscular and skeletal condition, for example, low back pain, disc herniation, sciatica, neck pain, etc. Medicare does not cover preventative chiropractic care. There is an effort by the American Chiropractic Association to achieve Medicare parity through the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 2654).

In my experience most Medicare patients also have a supplemental plan. The supplemental plan almost always only covers the Medicare annual deductible and 20% coinsurance. Medicaid will not pay if it is secondary. Medicare Advantage plans generally follow Medicare coverage but may have a higher copay.

The bottom line is that Medicare helps pay some of the cost of chiropractic services but does not cover any other chiropractic services, such as evaluation, any necessary x-rays, extremity adjustments, massage, or physiotherapy modalities (electrical stimulation, ultrasound, cold laser, traction, decompression), orthotics, etc. In my opinion, services not covered by Medicare are usually needed to provide appropriate patient care and get a good outcome. Most Americans can easily afford chiropractic services and chiropractic care may take the place of more costly and invasive procedures.

Neck or Back Pain from Sitting? You May Need a Standing Desk

Dr. Luke Henry, Chiropractic Physician

Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative and the inventor of the treadmill desk has studied the effects of sedentary lifestyle and has coined the phrase, “Sitting is the new smoking”. Evidence suggests that sitting too much increases risk of obesity and many chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Dr. Levine went so far as to say, “Sitting too much kills”. As a chiropractor, I see many patients with neck, shoulder and back pain caused by prolonged sitting. Sitting at a computer all day or extensive driving can lead to poor posture, chronic muscle strain and may accelerate degenerative changes in the discs of the spine. The intervertebral discs, the “shock absorbers” between the bones of the spine need movement to stay healthy. I frequently recommend a standing desk as an option for my patients, along with therapeutic exercises to improve posture and relieve repetitive stress. Stretching and adding movement throughout the day helps relieve aches and pains and increases productivity. If you need help with neck pain, back pain, disc problems or an auto accident injury, call my office for an appointment at 864-288-7797.
